Balance

The net amount you owe or are owed across all friends and groups. A positive balance means you’re owed money; negative means you owe.

Expense

A shared cost that gets split among two or more people. Each expense has a title, amount, currency, payer, and split breakdown.

Friend

A person you’ve shared expenses with. Friends are added automatically when you’re included in the same group or expense.

Group

A container for expenses and payments between a set of people. Groups have a default currency and can be typed (travel, home, couple, event, other).

Payment

A settlement transaction where one person pays another to reduce their balance. Payments don’t have splits — they’re direct transfers.

Recurring expense

An expense that repeats on a schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly). The CLI creates individual expenses from recurring rules automatically.

Settlement

The process of paying off balances. When you “settle up” with someone, you record a payment that zeroes out what you owe them.

Skill

A plugin that connects BananaSplit to an AI agent. The skill tells the agent how to use BananaSplit commands and when to use them.

Split

How an expense is divided among participants. Splits can be equal (everyone pays the same) or custom (specific amounts per person).

MCP (Model Context Protocol)

An open standard for connecting AI clients directly to data sources. BananaSplit’s MCP server lets Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other clients access your expenses without going through the CLI.
