General

BananaSplit is an expense tracking app for splitting costs with friends across vacations, roommates, couples, and group events. Your data syncs across iOS, Android, web, and the CLI.
Yes, BananaSplit is free to use. The CLI, agent skills, and MCP server are all free.
Yes. Run banana login to sign in or create an account through your browser.

CLI

macOS, Linux, and Windows. Install via the standalone binary (no runtime needed) or via npm/Bun.
  • macOS: System keychain
  • Linux/Windows: ~/.local/share/banana/credentials.json (mode 0600)
Set BANANASPLIT_NO_KEYCHAIN=1 to use the file store on macOS.
This removes the CLI and revokes your stored credentials.
Yes, for local development:

Agent integration

Any agent with shell access: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, opencode, and others.
Run banana skill install after installing the CLI. This installs the skill for all detected agents.
Start a new agent session after installing the skill. Existing sessions don’t load new skills.
No. You sign in via banana login in your terminal. The agent only uses CLI commands — it never sees your credentials.

MCP

Model Context Protocol — an open standard for connecting AI clients directly to data sources. BananaSplit’s MCP server lets Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other clients access your expenses without going through the CLI.
Add https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp to your client’s MCP server configuration. See MCP setup for details.
Yes. On first connection, a browser window opens for you to approve access. No tokens to manage.

Troubleshooting

The CLI isn’t in your PATH. Either:
  • Restart your terminal
  • Add the install directory to your PATH
  • Reinstall: curl -fsSL https://github.com/teotti/banana-cli/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
This refreshes your credentials.
Run banana doctor to check:
  • CLI is installed correctly
  • You’re signed in
  • Skill version matches CLI version
If versions don’t match, run banana skill install --force.
