# MCP setup

> Configure AI clients to connect to BananaSplit.

## Claude Desktop

Add to your Claude Desktop config (`~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json` on macOS):

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "bananasplit": {
      "url": "https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Restart Claude Desktop. When you first ask about expenses, Claude will prompt you to authorize in your browser.

## Cursor

In Cursor settings, add the MCP server:

1. Open **Settings** → **MCP Servers**
2. Add a new server with URL: `https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp`
3. Name it "BananaSplit"

## VS Code with Copilot

Add to your VS Code settings:

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcp.servers": {
    "bananasplit": {
      "url": "https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

## ChatGPT

ChatGPT supports MCP connectors. Add BananaSplit through:

1. **Settings** → **Connectors**
2. Add custom MCP server: `https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp`

## Generic MCP clients

Any MCP-compatible client can connect using:

| Field | Value |
| - | - |
| **URL** | `https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp` |
| **Transport** | HTTP with SSE |
| **Auth** | OAuth 2.0 (browser consent) |

## First connection

When your AI client first tries to access BananaSplit:

1. A browser window opens automatically
2. Sign in to BananaSplit if needed
3. Review the permissions requested
4. Click **Approve** to grant access

The connection persists across sessions. You can revoke access anytime from your BananaSplit account settings.

## Troubleshooting

### "Connection refused" or timeout

* Check your internet connection
* Verify the URL is exactly `https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp`
* Restart your AI client

### Browser doesn't open for auth

* Some clients need manual URL opening — check the client's output for a login URL
* Ensure your default browser is set correctly

### "Unauthorized" after approving

* The consent may have expired — try reconnecting
* Check if you denied permissions accidentally
