## General

    BananaSplit is an expense tracking app for splitting costs with friends across vacations, roommates, couples, and group events. Your data syncs across iOS, Android, web, and the CLI.

    Yes, BananaSplit is free to use. The CLI, agent skills, and MCP server are all free.

    Yes. Run `banana login` to sign in or create an account through your browser.

## CLI

    macOS, Linux, and Windows. Install via the standalone binary (no runtime needed) or via npm/Bun.

  <Accordion title="Where are my credentials stored?">
    * **macOS**: System keychain
    * **Linux/Windows**: `~/.local/share/banana/credentials.json` (mode 0600)

    Set `BANANASPLIT_NO_KEYCHAIN=1` to use the file store on macOS.

  <Accordion title="How do I update the CLI?">

    This removes the CLI and revokes your stored credentials.

    Yes, for local development:

## Agent integration

  <Accordion title="Which agents are supported?">
    Any agent with shell access: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, opencode, and others.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need to install the skill separately?">
    Run `banana skill install` after installing the CLI. This installs the skill for all detected agents.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why isn't my agent using the skill?">
    Start a **new agent session** after installing the skill. Existing sessions don't load new skills.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can the agent access my password?">
    No. You sign in via `banana login` in your terminal. The agent only uses CLI commands — it never sees your credentials.

## MCP

  <Accordion title="What is MCP?">
    Model Context Protocol — an open standard for connecting AI clients directly to data sources. BananaSplit's MCP server lets Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other clients access your expenses without going through the CLI.

    Add `https://api.bananasplit.net/mcp` to your client's MCP server configuration. See [MCP setup](/mcp/setup) for details.

  <Accordion title="Is MCP authentication automatic?">
    Yes. On first connection, a browser window opens for you to approve access. No tokens to manage.

## Troubleshooting

  <Accordion title="'banana: command not found'">
    The CLI isn't in your PATH. Either:

    * Restart your terminal
    * Add the install directory to your PATH
    * Reinstall: `curl -fsSL https://github.com/teotti/banana-cli/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh`

  <Accordion title="'Unauthorized' or login issues">
    ```bash theme={null}
    banana logout
    banana login
    ```

    This refreshes your credentials.

  <Accordion title="Skill not working with my agent">
    Run `banana doctor` to check:

    * CLI is installed correctly
    * You're signed in
    * Skill version matches CLI version

    If versions don't match, run `banana skill install --force`.
