# Output formats

> JSON, raw, and human-readable output from the CLI.

## Default output

Commands print human-readable output by default. Tables are aligned, details show as `Label: value` blocks, and colors adapt to light and dark terminals.

```bash theme={null}
banana balance
```

```
You owe Ana €21.00
João owes you €15.50
```

## JSON output

Use `--json` for structured output ideal for agents and scripts:

```bash theme={null}
banana balance --json
```

```json theme={null}
{
  "owed": [{"name": "Ana", "amount": "21.00", "currency": "EUR"}],
  "owedToYou": [{"name": "João", "amount": "15.50", "currency": "EUR"}]
}
```

The flag can appear before or after the command:

```bash theme={null}
banana --json groups list --limit 10
banana groups get Lisbon --json
```

## Raw output

Use `--raw` for the complete API response:

```bash theme={null}
banana groups get Lisbon --raw
```

Returns the full payload including all fields, metadata, and nested objects.

## Pagination

List commands return paginated results. In JSON output, responses include:

```json theme={null}
{
  "items": [...],
  "hasMore": true,
  "nextCursor": "abc123"
}
```

Use `--cursor` to fetch the next page:

```bash theme={null}
banana expenses list --cursor abc123 --json
```

In interactive terminals, the browser loads more items as you scroll. Press `↓` at the end to load the next page.

## Error output

Errors go to stderr:

* Human mode: `Error: MESSAGE`
* JSON mode: `{"error": "...", "code": "..."}`
* Raw mode: Full API error body when available

## Color

Colors are dropped when output is not a TTY or `NO_COLOR` is set.
